Trythall Champs at the Cornwall Chess Challenge

2nd May 2015
On Saturday, many of our best chess players took part in the Cornwall Chess Challenge competition at Penair School in Truro. All performed well and sveral showed themselves to be best in the county. Despite a late night at the Hall For Cornwall the night before, Otto, Dylan, Joseph, Lily, Katie and Noah all made the early morning coach to meet the registration dealine at Penair.  All children performed well and took part in all six games in a gruelling (but enjoyable) all day tournament. 3 children won their competitions: Noah (Cornwall Top Under 10 Boy); Katie (Cornwall Top Under 8 Girl) and Lily (Cornwall Top Under 10 Girl). This was a great achievement for all 3 but particularly for Noah who easily exceeded his target of winning one game from six. All 3 qualify for the Southern Area Final in Reading in the Summer.
Otto played exceptionally well and despite coming equal first in the boys under 7 section, he was judged as coming second place due to the tie-break rules. He scored an amazing 3 and a half wins in a section that also included the under 8s!
Both Dylan and Joseph exceeded their totals at previous competitions.
Mat strevens,Headteacher said afterwards,"It's very good for children to learn chess and a competition like this has to be a great workout for their minds, which like a muscle, grows according to use. Most of all, I am so proud of these children for their enthusiasm, efforts and achievements in chess."
