Chess Champion Finn in Final!

7th May 2013

Finn Slater, of Trythall CP School, New Mill was thrilled to win the U10 section of the Cornwall Chess Competition, on Saturday 4th May, being the only competitor in all age groups to win all 6 of his games.
Despite qualifying every year for the last 3 years, this is the first time that Finn has been able to take part, as his family normally take him on holiday to Spain at this time of year.
Finn said, ‘I had been practising chess at school chess club and at home but I really didn’t expect to win.  I really enjoyed the day because most of the games were quite a challenge, especially the last one. I went behind by one piece but managed to capture a bishop and come back to win. ’ Finn has been playing chess for a couple of years. He now qualifies for the Southern area final.

Kai, Lucy, Sennen, Lily and Katie from Trythall also qualified and took part in the Cornwall finals.

The school has a long tradition of playing chess and it is great to see a new batch of talented players coming through.
